What is an IT roadmap, and do we need one?

An IT roadmap is a phased plan that sets out which technology changes the business will make, in what order, and in which budget period. If your business is growing and IT decisions are mostly made when something breaks, you will probably benefit from one.

What a roadmap contains

  • A summary of what you have today and its condition.
  • The business goals the plan supports.
  • Changes grouped into phases, each with a reason and an expected budget period.
  • Dependencies, such as replacing a server before moving an application off it.

Signs you need one

Common signs include equipment failing without warning, subscriptions nobody can account for, a large unplanned bill every year or two, and new staff waiting for laptops or accounts. A roadmap replaces those surprises with planned decisions.

What it is not

A roadmap is not a supplier’s shopping list, and it does not need to be long. A clear one-page summary backed by a simple spreadsheet is enough for many businesses.
